Then-manager Benitez sold Toney to Peterborough United in 2018. The striker has since thrived at the League One club – and he has been tipped for a big-money move.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Toney said: "When he came in, I was injured at the time, and he put the injured lads at the bottom end, so it was kind of tough to take. Rafa’s a great manager, but, personally, I don't think I was given that chance. That's my opinion on it – others may feel different."

Toney, 23, has scored 15 League One goals so far this season, and Peterborough owner Darragh MacAnthony believes that Newcastle fans would have “loved” him at St James’s Park.

MacAnthony tweeted: “Toon fans would have loved him if he broke through."
