Mark Lawrenson has predicted that Newcastle United will follow up their “extremely poor display” against Chelsea last week with another loss to Crystal Palace on Friday night.

The Magpies put in an underwhelming performance in a 2-0 home defeat to the Blues, and registered just 29% possession against Frank Lampard’s men.

Crystal Palace suffered a similarly disappointing result in their last outing, losing 1-0 to struggling Burnley at Turf Moor.

But even taking into consideration the possibility of the Eagles being without star man Wilfried Zaha, Lawrenson believes that another negative showing from Steve Bruce’s side could cost them the points at Sehurst Park.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the pundit said: “Newcastle started off defending deep in their defeat by Chelsea and then got even deeper.

“The Magpies had the odd opportunity but it was an extremely poor display from them. Callum Wilson could be fit to return up front this weekend, but they still need to create far more chances than they have been.

“Crystal Palace were not great either, and they really missed Wilfried Zaha. Whenever he's back after testing positive for coronavirus, he will make a big difference”.

Lawrenson predicts a 2-1 Palace win.

Newcastle have struggled against Roy Hodgson’s side in recent times, and have won just one of their last five meetings with the Eagles.

That victory came last season, with Miguel Almiron scoring a late winner at St. James’ Park in December.

Palace got their revenge in the reverse fixture, however, with Patrick Van Aanholt striking to give them a 1-0 win at Selhurst Park in February.
