As a result, the Switzerland international – only just returned from an 11-week injury absence – will miss United’s next three Premier League fixtures against Leicester City, Manchester City and Sheffield United.

Schar was red-carded in the closing stages of the 2-0 St James’ Park loss by Mike Dean for a tackle from behind on Gunners’ forward Gabriel Martinelli.

In a statement released on the club’s social media, Newcastle United confirmed: “#NUFC's appeal against the red card shown to Fabian Schär in Sunday's defeat to Arsenal has been unsuccessful.

“The defender will now be suspended for our next three fixtures.”

Schar, who has eyes on being fit for his country’s European Championships campaign this summer, only returned from a serious knee injury last week, playing 45 minutes for the club’s under-23s on Monday before coming off the bench for the first-team.
