Newcastle United have taken an option to extend Schar’s contract, which had been due to expire this summer. However, that move doesn't mean that the defender – who at Euro 2020 with Switzerland – won’t be leaving the club in the window.

German outlet Sport Bild claim that the 29-year-old, signed from Deportivo La Coruna three years ago during Rafa Benitez’s time as manager, is keen on a move to a Bundesliga club. Schar played for Hoffenheim earlier in his career.

Newcastle are yet to confirm Schar’s one-year contract extension, though head coach Steve Bruce addressed his situation last month. Bruce said: “With Fab Schar, I think there’s a clause in his contract where we can extend it. I believe that’s the case."

Schar scored in United’s season-ending win over Fulham after returning from a three-game suspension.
