The defender – who is out of contract at the end of the season – scored Newcastle’s winner against Southampton at the weekend.

Fernandez has won praise from head coach Steve Bruce in recent weeks – and he’s ready to discuss a longer stay at St James’s Park in the New Year.

Asked if he wanted to extend his stay, Fernandez told the Gazette: “Yes, it’s a great club.

“Of course, we need to talk in January. We will see what the club think about it. We will sit at the table and see what the options are.

“I haven’t spoken yet. I focus on playing, on the team. It’s December, so we have time. I’m focused. When you play, play well, team plays well, everything is easier. We’ll see what’s going on in the next two months.”

Fernandez’s goal, his second of the season, moved the club up to 11th in the Premier League ahead of Saturday’s game against Burnley at Turf Moor.

“It feels great scoring in the last couple of minutes, especially because it was a tough game, not the best one for us,” said the 30-year-old. “We were playing a team that is around us, and it was a massive three points.

“We need to enjoy that kind of moment, because we have a busy December with a lot of games. We’re on a good run, and we need to carry on in this way and try and take as many points as we can.”

Bruce’s appointment as Rafa Benitez’s successor in the summer was met with a lukewarm reception on Tyneside – and he admitted he needed to win over fans when he took the job.

Fernandez believes that Bruce deserves credit for the job he is doing at his boyhood club.

“The gaffer is doing a great job,” said Fernandez. “We’re solid. That’s what he wants. We create chances, we fight, we stay in games against difficult teams.

“He’s really happy about what we have done in the last three months, but we want more. For us, we just need to enjoy the moment – and try to finish higher.”
