The Magpies’ recruitment team have sounded out the Norwegian international as a potential target having made checks on him last season.

Figures of around £6million to £8m have been quoted but Steve Bruce’s side aren’t the only team showing interest in the 6ft6 23-year-old.

Bayer Leverkusen and Norwich City are also among the clubs mentioned but Campbell is adamant he’ll end up at St James’s Park.

“That is going to happen,” he told Football Insider.

“The lure of Newcastle, who are a big club, is going to be a bit too strong I think. Ajer, like the majority of players out there, wants to play in the Premier League. It is a big draw.

“I am pretty sure that one is going to happen. From what I hear from people in the game, he has made his intentions quite clear.”
