Former Newcastle United coach named as new manager of League Two newcomers
A former Newcastle United academy coach will step into senior management with League Two club Northampton Town.
Former Newcastle United coach Chris Hogg has been named as new manager of League Two club Northampton Town.
The Teessider spent time coaching within the Ipswich Town academy setup before moving to Newcastle to take charge of the Under-23s in February 2020. After watching on a side containing the likes of Elliot Anderson and Tom Allan claimed a 6-2 win against Scunthorpe United and a 2-0 victory against Middlesbrough, Hogg’s introduction to life with the Magpies was halted by a Covid-19 lockdown.
Hogg remained in charge of the United second string throughout the following season as fixtures were played behind closed doors before moving on to spend time on the senior coaching staff of the likes of MK Dons, Oxford United, Bristol City and Norwich City over the following years. He will now step into his first senior managerial role as he takes charge of Northampton as they look to bounce back from suffering relegation into League Two next season.
Hogg told the Northampton Town website: “I am delighted to be named as the new manager of Northampton Town Football Club. From the first conversations with Colin and James, and then with Kelvin, I gained a great feel for the potential of the role, and what I believe we can achieve together.
“The work has already started to try and deliver a successful season. The teams I have coached in the past have placed great value on possession of the ball, to dominate opponents, and I still value those traits, but let me be clear, this is a results business and I have always wanted to win. We will change the mentality and build up the connection between the players and the supporters.”
Cobblers chairman Kelvin Thomas added: "Chris Hogg was outstanding throughout the recruitment process. Not only in terms of how he presented to us, but in terms of the feedback we received from across the game about Chris. People who have worked with him and who have come across him have spoken very highly of Chris and how they expect him to go on and become a successful manager.”
