Former Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor joins A-League exodus

Steven Taylor has joined a growing A-League exodus – and is heading to India.

The former Newcastle United defender today left Wellington Phoenix, where he was captain, and the 34-year-old has signed for Indian Super League club Odisha FC.

“It is with a heavy heart that I am saying goodbye to the Nix,” said Taylor. “I want to say a huge thank you to the club owners, the board and the many great staff that I have worked with, and I want to especially thank (coach) Ufuk (Talay) for his faith in me and making me captain of this great club.

“To my team-mates, I will miss playing together, but I know I have made lifelong friends. Finally, to the supporters, you are truly one of a kind – amazing.”

Taylor’s departure comes amid talks which could see the wages of A-League players slashed by up to 30%. The A-League has been badly affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
