'He was fuming' - Sky pundit claims Newcastle player could be dropped after what Bruce saw vs Leeds

Tim Sherwood has claimed that Miguel Almiron’s defensive lapse at Elland Road in midweek could cost him his place in the starting lineup against Fulham on Saturday evening.

The Paraguayan started the 5-2 defeat against Leeds United on the bench having scored against West Brom a few days earlier, but was introduced to the action in the 75th minute.

Just two minutes later, however, he failed to track a back-post run from Stuart Dallas, who subsequently nodded home to make it 3-2 to the hosts.

From that point on, Marcelo Bielsa’s side stepped things up a gear, and went on to score twice more in the closing stages.

Reflecting on the match on Sky Sports News’ Soccer Saturday, Sherwood argued that the 26-year-old could be dropped from the Magpies’ plans on the basis of that incident alone.

The former Tottenham Hotspur manager said: “He was fuming there, Brucey, wasn’t he?

"He’d just made that change – Almiron had just come on as sub. He’s wanting to get the ball, he’s wanting to prove to Steve. He’s scored in the last game, he showed he can do something going forward.

"Against Leeds, you have to be dilligent, you have to defend first and foremost. He just lets him come on the blindside and head that one in.

"He was fuming at him there, and it might cost him his place this weekend.”

Almiron has made 11 appearances in the Premier League this season, but only six of those outings have been in a starting role.
