Only Joe Willock was added to Steve Bruce’s squad then as Newcastle, under previous ownership, felt the cost of the coronavirus pandemic.
Despite offloading 16 players, Newcastle were still able to name a full 25-man Premier League squad and are still feeling the effects of the bloated squad today with Isaac Hayden, Jamal Lewis and Ciaran Clark all being omitted from Eddie Howe’s squad.
The players that left Newcastle this summer have all enjoyed vastly different experiences since leaving the club.
Some are fighting relegation battles abroad, others have impressed down the football league pyramid whilst others have linked up with former Magpies managers.
With that in mind, here, we take a look at what happened to the 16 players that left Newcastle United in the summer and how they have fared since their respective departures:

. Christian Atsu: Al-Raed
Atsu left Newcastle this summer after spending just shy of five-years on Tyneside. He has featured just four times for the Saudi-outfit however, totalling 116 minutes of action in total at time of writing. Photo: Marc Atkins

. Kelland Watts: Wigan Athletic
Wigan have been impressing in League One this season and Watts has played a crucial part in their push for promotion. His form has even earned him a new two-year contract with United. Photo: Charlotte Tattersall

9. Tom Allan: Greenock Morton
Allan has had less success in Scotland than his teammate McEntee. He has completed 90 minutes just once since his move north of the border. Photo: Ian MacNicol

10. Florian Lejeune: Deportivo Alaves
An early-season ankle injury kept the Frenchman out of action for six weeks, however, he has since recovered and been a regular member of the Alaves team, putting injury worries that plagued his spell on Tyneside aside. Alaves currently sit second-bottom in La Liga. Photo: OSCAR DEL POZO

11. Jake Turner: Newcastle United
Turner moved to Colchester United in the summer in a bid to get regular game time. However, the keeper only made nine league appearances and conceded 15 goals in that time. He returned to the north east last month but conceded six in the Under-23’s defeat to Fulham in midweek. Photo: Charlotte Tattersall

12. Owen Bailey: Gateshead
Despite being on the fringes of the first-team in 2019 during their pre-season tour to China, injury problems meant Newcastle United opted not to extend Owen Bailey’s contract this summer. He now features for Gateshead under former-Magpie Mike Williamson and has been a key figure as the Heed currently sit in first place. Photo: Mark Runnacles
