Hull City consider move for Eddie Howe favourite 12 months after Newcastle United exit
A former Newcastle United striker could be handed a return to the Premier League after suffering relegation with West Ham United.
Former Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson could be handed an immediate return to the Premier League by a club preparing to return to the top flight after a nine-year absence.
The experienced frontman joined Newcastle in a reported £20million deal during the summer of 2020 and marked his competitive debut with a goal in a 2-0 win at future employers West Ham United on the opening day of the season. By the time the striker’s time on Tyneside came to a close, Wilson had scored 49 goals in 130 appearances in all competitions and was part of the United squad that competed in the Champions League during the 2023/24 season before lifting the Carabao Cup in March last year.
Wilson was released by the Magpies last summer and penned a one-year deal at West Ham United - but despite scoring seven goals in 32 appearances, he was unable to prevent the Hammers from suffering relegation into the Championship on the final day of the season.
Posting on social media in the aftermath of the Hammers relegation and ahead of an expected departure from the London Stadium, the former England striker said: "It hurts. We have failed as a team and definitely fallen short of everyone’s expectations. It was well documented that I had a history with West Ham, yet from the moment I arrived, I felt nothing but welcomed by all the fans here. I felt really good and positive coming into this season, and I believe I could have contributed more given the opportunity.
“As you could see, my time on the pitch was very limited at times, but that was out of my control. I’ve always trained hard, kept my integrity, and given my all whenever I’ve been allowed to wear the iconic Claret and Blue shirt. For now, all I can say is thank you. Thank you to everyone who supported us. Your passion is amazing, and I truly hope you return to the Premier League, where you belong, as soon as possible. Take care, Callum."
‘Concrete discussions’

As Wilson assesses the next move in his career, Hull Live have reported Premier League newcomers Hull City are ‘monitoring the situation’ as they look at add to their attacking options ahead of their return to the top flight of English football. The Tigers secured promotion with a narrow Championship play-off final win against Middlesbrough as Oli McBurnie’s late strike helped see off Kim Hellberg’s men at Wembley.
Hull boss Sergej Jakirovic can already rely on the services of play-off final hero McBurnie and Kyle Joseph ahead of the new campaign - but he is currently considering whether to make a move to add Wilson to his squad before the new season gets underway in August. The report suggests the Tigers head coach is keen to add a blend of youth and experience to his squad - but there is also a warning Hull will face competition for Wilson’s signature and stresses the Tigers are yet to decide whether to ‘push ahead with concrete discussions’ over the next week.
