Mistakes from Miguel Almiron and Sean Longstaff led to the Saints’ two goals, while Steve Bruce’s side managed just two shots on target.

It was an abject display in all aspects – as supporters pointed out in their full-time summaries:

@Iewisnufc_: £100m spent on attackers. Signing Premier League experienced players, still the same dross. It’s simply not good enough and quite frankly embarrassing. Nothing will change with Bruce as manager.

@ColmRose94: That second half was as bad as a Premier League team will play this season. Absolutely embarrassing, nothing about us whatsoever, Bruce stood there barely saying a word, that was humiliating to watch.

@Samanth38751329: Dreadful performance, please don’t use the “we had to travel down today” excuse. No excuses for that performance.

@ChrisPetrie19: Get them on the training ground tomorrow and get them learning the basics again of how to pass the ball to your own player.

@geordie_lamb: Well done Southampton. Would have been embarrassing if we nicked a point. Embarrassing.

@sausagegrant: That was actually painful to watch. My head is pounding from being so angry at how shocking every player was tonight (maybe minus Darlow)

@WhitleyBirder: Worst performance we’ve seen in a long time, we’ve got absolutely nothing in midfield without Shelvey and Hayden.
