However, the 25-year-old found time to catch up with the club’s media team and discuss his time at St James’s Park.

Willems made it clear of his desire to return to Tyneside on a permanent basis in the summer. He also revealed he plans to keep on attending United home matches.

The former PSV left-back said: “These seven months - (I have enjoyed) everything. Not only the goals but just the time here with the players, city and fans and everything in it.

“I hope it wasn’t my last game for Newcastle.

“I’d like to thank them for the respect they give me and are giving me. I appreciate it. For me, of course I was sad but now I’m focusing on coming back.

“I still have my house and box in the stadium and will come to home games. I am not done here.

“I’m still a Newcastle player until June, for me it is not a problem to come back. For me it’s home - it’s good to be home, right?
