Newcastle United complete their pre-season campaign with a behind-closed-doors home game against the Championship side this afternoon (1pm kick-off). Barlaser, 23, starts in midfield.

Head coach Bruce, preparing his team for next Saturday’s Premier League season-opener against West Ham United at the London Stadium, is without Ciaran Clark, Paul Dummett, Matty Longstaff, Fabian Schar and Jonjo Shelvey as well as long-term absentees Dwight Gayle and Martin Dubravka. Matt Ritchie and Florian Lejeune were also not involved.

Jeff Hendrick and Emil Krafth are also away on international duty, while captain Jamaal Lacelles is not available following his dismissal in Tuesday’s 5-1 defeat to Middlesbrough. A proposed rematch on Tyneside was cancelled because of the club’s lengthening injury list.
