Wilson, Newcastle’s United's 10-goal leading scorer, suffered a "devastating” hamstring against Southampton earlier this month which could keep him out for up to eight weeks. The injury couldn’t have come at a worse time given the relegation-threatened club’s predicament near the foot of the Premier League.

"It’s a bad tear on his hamstring – it’s devastating news for all of us,” said head coach Steve Bruce.

United’s best-case scenario is seemingly a return to training late next month. Wilson is into week three of his recovery, and Bournemouth-based Prime Performance have posted a series of clips on Instagram of the 29-year-old doing strength and conditioning work in their gym.

Fans will hope that Wilson, signed from Bournemouth last summer, is slightly ahead of schedule given his importance to the 17th-placed club, which is just three points above the drop zone ahead of Saturday’s home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
