Sandro Tonali is back with the Italy squad having played just 84 minutes of competitive football for Newcastle United in the last 10 months.

Tonali has just returned from a lengthy betting ban and started Newcastle’s Carabao Cup win at Nottingham Forest before coming off the bench to help secure a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at St James’ Park on Sunday. Now, the midfielder is back with the Italy squad for the first time since his ban was implemented last October.

Italy play France on Friday, September 6 and Israel on Monday, September 9 in the Nations League. Tonali has earned 15 caps for the Azzurri and has been in Florence training with his teammates this week in preparation for the upcoming matches.

Italy manager Luciano Spalletti was asked about Tonali’s inclusion in the Italy squad after so little competitive game time since his previous call-up.

“Tonali trained regularly,” he said. “He is a player we have a lot of faith in, so he is coming with us.

“He is one of those who I have spoken to probably more than anyone else in this recent period, the boy has done a lot of reflecting and this is another reason to bring him with us.”

Tonali’s inclusion in the Italy squad is a welcome boost for the 24-year-old as he looks to get back up to full match sharpness as quickly as possible. Newcastle will return to action following the international break at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday, September 15 (4:30pm kick-off) as Tonali eyes his first Premier League start since October 2023.
