Steve Bruce revealed after Wednesday nights 7-0 win over Morecambe that Murphy would not be allowed out on loan this season.
The winger – who has had loans at Sheffield Wednesday and West Bromwich Albion – had been wanted by a number of clubs. However, Bruce, United’s head coach, said the 24-year-old “deserved” a chance on Tyneside after an impressive performance at the Mazuma Stadium.
“We’ve had several conversations, and he keeps telling me ‘keep patient, keep working hard’, which I have been doing,” said Murphy. “I know when I get an opportunity, I have got to perform, and I felt I did that. I just want to keep getting opportunities to show what I can do for this club.
