Wilson flew into the city yesterday on Mike Ashley’s helicopter after the club had a £20million bid accepted by Bournemouth. The striker is expected to complete his medical today along with 26-year-old winger Fraser, a free agent after leaving Bournemouth this summer.

The England international had also been a target for Aston Villa, but the club pulled out after the 28-year-old made it clear that a move to St James’s Park was his preference.

United have also reached a £15million agreement with Norwich City for 22-year-old left-back Lewis, who is away on international duty with Northern Ireland.

Norwich head coach Daniel Farke addressed Lewis’s future amid talks between the two club’s after his team’s EFL Cup defeat to Luton Town on Saturday.

“From the sporting point of view, we need our best players – and I wouldn’t sell any of our best players,” said Farke.

“But I’m not naive. Decisions have to be made in the interests of the club, not just the head coach.

“If the board and our sporting director has a situation where they have to make a decision in the best interests of the club, they’re better placed than me. I trust the key people to make the best decisions. But I don’t know if there is any news.”

Newcastle have already signed free agents Jeff Hendrick and Mark Gillespie.
