Jonjo Shelvey has this to say about his Twitter critics

Shelvey has spoken about criticism of him on Twitter in an interview for the club’s matchday programme.

The midfielder came under fire from some supporters for his performance in Monday night's 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Villa Park.

And Shelvey is under pressure from Sean Longstaff, back from suspension, ahead of this afternoon’s Premier League home game against Manchester City.

The 27-year-old is not on social media, but he's made aware of some of what’s said about him on Twitter by his friends.

“The season before, everyone in the whole country was saying ‘you should be going to the World Cup’, and now you get labelled as a bad footballer,” said Shelvey, who hasn’t played for England since joining United in January 2016. “That don’t change overnight, do you know what I mean?

“My friends send me stuff from Twitter of people who’ve been hammering you, then you have a good game and they’re literally buzzing off you.

“People hide behind keyboards and things like that, and it is what it is – you’re going to get that. That’s never ever going to stop in football. You just need to ignore it.”

Shelvey reaffirmed his commitment to Newcastle in the summer in an interview with the Gazette. He said: “I won’t be leaving this football club. I don’t know who wants me to leave or doesn’t want me to leave, but as far as I’m aware I’m a Newcastle United player.”
