The Newcastle United midfielder has scored five Premier League goals this season, a career-best total, ahead of Sunday’s home game against Sheffield United. Shelvey – who scored a controversial goal in December’s 2-0 win at Bramall Lane – is relishing the restart after a three-month break due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“I can’t wait – it’s been a long time,” said Shelvey. “I think it’s something that the public needs. Gradually, things are starting to open up, which is good. Football’s a big part of the community, so it’s good to have it back.”

Shelvey, troubled by a thigh injury last season, signed a contract extension this year following a return to form.

“All in all it’s been a good season,” the 28-year-old told NUFC TV. “I’ve scored five goals, and hopefully more to come.”
