Karl Darlow backed to maintain Newcastle United form with Martin Dubravka deputy set for Premier League run

An FA Cup last eight tie and a Premier League relegation run-in – patience has been a virtue for Karl Darlow, but he’s on the cusp of big opportunity to prove his worth at Newcastle United.

The former Nottingham Forest keeper is likely to be handed the chance to see out much of the top flight campaign by boss Steve Bruce following the news that Martin Dubravka will miss the next six to eight weeks after suffering knee ligament damage in the win at Southampton at the weekend.

And the Slovakia international is sure deputy Darlow, or Rob Elliot, can continue his incredible form, which has seen Dubravka climb to the top of the save charts in the Premier League this season.

"I was trying to be ready for every game - even if I had small injuries. The people who know me know I want to play every time even if I'm not 100%,” said Dubravka, speaking to nufc.co.uk.

"Obviously, this is bigger than that so I can't play against Sheffield United (on Saturday), but I'm quite confident that my teammates, whether it's Karl or Rob, will play very well. I'm going to support them from the stands.”

Dubravka, who could well be out until the end of the season with the issue, continued: “They show it on the pitch - Karl has shown it in the cup games - so I'm definitely confident and comfortable with whichever of the keepers will be in goal. I'm going to support them because they provide fantastic support for me as well.

"It means a lot because even Karl came to me the next day and asked how it was. You don't have that connection always and, I've said many times, I'm very grateful for that. Obviously, this is a chance for them now but it's good because we are still not safe and I'm quite sure that they will show their ability and show their levels."

Darlow looks set to be handed the gloves for the Blades clash on Saturday, followed by the FA Cup sixth round clash against Manchester City.
