And the midfielder, signed in the summer of 2018 by then-manager Rafa Benitez, has spoken about his future in the matchday programme for tonight’s FA Cup replay against Rochdale.

“When you don’t play, of course there’s speculation, like transfer rumours and all kinds,” said the 30-year-old. “I don’t blame anyone, because I haven’t performed well. But I was very happy when I was playing in front of the fans and supporters. If I go somewhere else, I’m still proud of Newcastle – it’s a big club for me, and I really enjoy playing in front of a lot of passion.

“We have to see what’s going to happen, but I’m still proud of all the fans and the club.”
