'Outstanding' Newcastle United star 'gutted' after three-month training ground injury blow

Newcastle United injuries: Lewis Miley has reacted to the injury blow that cut his season short.

Lewis Miley has broken his silence on the broken fibula injury that ended his 2025/26 season for Newcastle United prematurely.

The 20-year-old suffered the injury two weeks ago and required surgery that would ultimately keep him out until the start of the 2026/27 season.

Miley missed Newcastle’s 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest and 3-1 win over West Ham United. He will also miss the final day trip to Fulham on Sunday (4pm kick-off).

The midfielder scored his first Newcastle goal in a 3-1 Premier League win over Fulham back in 2024 as well as a stoppage-time winner in the Carabao Cup earlier this season. Miley established himself as a key player for Newcastle this season, having impressed both in midfield and at right-back when needed, making 34 appearances in all competitions.

Eddie Howe on Lewis Miley’s injury

As Miley refrained from speaking publicly about his injury, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said: “It was a really innocuous moment, really, [in] training.

“No one around him, there was no other player involved. He slipped and went down. We probably at that moment thought maybe just a twist of something, nothing too serious, but he was unable to continue and pretty early sort of became aware it was a little bit more serious than we thought.

“That's the fragile nature of a professional footballer's career and now he faces a few months out. We hope that he'll be back in and around it for pre-season.

“It's a real shame because he was playing really, really well, outstanding in recent weeks. We really missed him when he got his injury last time, so a real blow for us, but also for Louis and knowing the strength of character, he'll be back and he'll be back better than ever, but it's going to be a blow for him and for us.”

Two weeks on from his injury, Miley took to Instagram to express his frustration while also vowing to bounce back stronger in time for the start of the new season.

“Gutted with how my season has ended,” he wrote. “Thank you to everyone for your kind messages. I’ll be back stronger than ever in time for the new season. See you all soon, Magpies.”
