Progress? Not quite. Here’s Liam Kennedy’s player ratings from the 90 minutes at Craven Cottage, with Jonjo Shelvey the pick of the Magpies’ bunch in West London. Merit marks for the likes of Federico Fernandez, Joe Willock (obviously), Sean Longstaff and Matt Ritchie – but not for Allan Saint-Maximin.
9. Joe Willock – 7
His run from deep and eventual finish was the one real bit of quality in the 90. Incredible talent and has levelled Alan Shearer’s Newcastle record of scoring in seven consecutive Premier League games. Dropped off in the second period. Photo: Pool
10. Miguel Almiron – 6
A bit freer in a new forward role. Closed down and defended from the front well. Still just needs to find that final pass. Photo: MATTHEW CHILDS
11. Allan Saint-Maximin – 5
Nothing working for him. Everyone has those kind of afternoons. His runs were blocked, his skills anticipated and struggled to make the ball stick up top. Photo: Pool
12. Dwight Gayle - 5
(for Saint-Maximin 64) Had to score with a header, but put it over. Again done little to prove he is a worthy back up option. Photo: Stu Forster
