With all that in mind, who should the manager select for the trip to Crystal Palace this evening? Our NUFC writer Liam Kennedy picks his starting XI, and makes a system switch away from the recent flirtation with three at the back.
Here’s his one to 11, in a 4-2-3-1 system...
5. Left-back: Jamal Lewis
It's been an up and down start to life at SJP for the summer signing but there are signs of a good player in there to me. His form is unlikely to have been helped by United's generally awful performances. Photo: Alex Pantling
6. Central midfield: Jonjo Shelvey
A Marmite midfielder. When he's in, he's mostly poor. When he's out, you wonder if he'd be better in. Can't make my mind up on Shelvey, but given how poor Newcastle have been in this department of late, he's worth a shot. Photo: Alex Pantling
7. Central midfield: Matty Longstaff
If he's fit, he should really be playing. Everyone else tried in this department has flattered to deceive, so surely it's worth playing a lad the club fought so hard to keep? I'm convinced, with a run of games Longstaff can massively improve this department. Photo: -
8. Right wing: Miguel Almiron
It's not his best position, it's probably not in his top three but he needs to play - and United need his energy. Photo: Pool
