And writer Liam Kennedy gives his take on what Magpies team the manager should send out at Wolves this afternoon.
Here’s his selections, with one or two surprise inclusions.
5. Left-back: Jamal Lewis
Think it's fair to say he's had a nervy start to life at Newcastle United. The signs of a good player are there, but he's clearly still learning his game in this team. Photo: Matthew Peters
6. Centre midfield: Isaac Hayden
Another whose fitness is in question. But if fit he plays as there is no one who can do what he does - break up play. Does need to do a little more of that, mind. Photo: ALEX PANTLING
7. Centre midfield: Jonjo Shelvey
Man United wasn't his best day - far from it, in fact. But I think he's worth another shot in the middle. He can influence, just doesn't do it enough. Needs to want the ball more, bail your teammates out of positions, play the simple passes well. A lot could be forgiven if he takes this approach. Photo: Alex Pantling
8. Right side: Ryan Fraser
He's got to be fit enough now, so he has to be given a chance. And what better opportunity to rekindle his relationship with Callum Wilson than on an away day where United could utilise his pace on the break. Photo: PETER POWELL
