Departures were always more likely than incomings at St James’s Park – but Steve Bruce went with what he already has on his books, rather than dip into the market for lower league recruits.
With the window now closed, what constitutes Newcastle United’s strongest starting XI this season? Our writer Liam Kennedy takes injuries, illness and suspensions out the equation to name what he believes is Bruce and United’s best side for the Premier League.
9. No10: Joelinton
He never impressed up top and rarely on the left, but Steve Bruce might just have found a role for the Brazilian record buy, playing just off Callum Wilson. He was excellent playing between the lines v Burnley. Photo: PETER POWELL
10. Left side: Allan Saint-Maximin
New contract under his belt, Allan Saint-Maximin is riding the crest of a wave at Newcastle United. One of the stand out players of Project Restart, ASM has made a real name for himself in English football. Few players have the dribbling ability and bravery of the Frenchman in the division. 11. Striker: Callum Wilson
Four goals in four Premier League games, Wilson is flying at Newcastle United. In the recent Premier League era, the Magpies have rarely had a striker of Wilson's capability and long may his form and fitness continue. Photo: Stu Forster
