The club, yet to sign a player this summer, hopes to add the defender to its Under-23 squad at the end of the month. Savage has been offered a new one-year deal by Liverpool but the 19-year-old has discussed a move to Newcastle.

United released a number of Academy players, including Owen Bailey, Ludwig Francillette, Florent Indalecio and Kyle Scott, earlier this month.

Meanwhile, the club is also working on first-team signings. Head coach Steve Bruce last month pledged to “knock on the door” and demand backing for squad strengthening.

"At every club, we all want to succeed,” said Bruce. “Newcastle finishing 12th, that cannot be judged as an achievement. We’re pleased, don’t get me wrong from where we were. We’ve got to do better than that, that’s my job, to knock on the door, and make us better.”
