Mark Lawrenson reveals why he's predicted Newcastle United to lose to West Ham this weekend

Newcastle United's 2020/21 Premier League campaign kicks off this weekend, when the Magpies travel to east London to take on West Ham, in what should be a fiercely-fought contest between two well-matched sides.

Writing his weekly predictions column for BBC Sport, pundit Mark Lawrenson gave his verdict on United's chances of success this season, and claimed:

"Newcastle come into the new season on the back of some really good signings like Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser and Jeff Hendrick. You can see what Steve Bruce is thinking - he wanted some players who know all about the Premier League.

"This (game against West Ham) will be close, but I'm going with the Hammers. David Moyes has had some time to work with his team and, if they can get Tarkowski in - or someone like him - they will be safer, quicker, this time."

Lawro went on to give a 2-1 scoreline prediction in West Ham's favour, while his sparring partner for the week, soul singer and Arsenal fan Celeste, opted for a 2-2 draw at the London Stadium.

The last time the two sides met in the Premier League, back in July, the Magpies came back from a losing position twice to earn a 2-2 draw at St James' Park, with Miguel Almiron and Jonjo Shelvey scoring for Steve Bruce's side.

Meanwhile, speaking ahead of the match, the Newcastle manager revealed that Shelvey, along with Matt Ritchie, are both doubts for Saturday's game, as they are facing calf and knee injuries respectively.
