Longstaff returned to training at the start of the week after recovering from the thigh problem which has kept him out since the summer.

And the midfielder’s return comes ahead of the visit of Manchester United to St James’s Park on Saturday night for a pay-per-view Premier League game.

The 20-year-old – who signed a new two-year deal in August – scored against the club home and away last season. Longstaff, memorably, scored the winner against Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s side at St James’s Park on his Premier League debut a year ago.

Meanwhile, Paul Dummett – who, like Longstaff, are yet to feature this season because of injury – has been pictured on the training field ahead of the game along with defensive colleague Jamal Lewis, who missed Northern Ireland’s midweek fixture against Norway with an Achilles problem.
