After an eventful final few minutes, Rafa Benitez’s side were beaten 3-1 by Championship side Nottingham Forest on a testing evening at the City Ground.

The Spaniard named an experimental team for the cup outing, handing opportunities to several youngsters and summer signings ahead of Saturday’s trip to Manchester City.
