As a collective there were positive to take for Steve Bruce – as well as plenty of negatives, too.
Here’s Miles Starforth’s individual Newcastle United ratings from Old Trafford with Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin scoring well, but not so good for Karl Darlow...
9. Joelinton - 6
Handed his first start in more than a month, had an early deflected shot tipped over, but opted to square to Shelvey rather than shoot after intercepting a poor de Gea pass. Photo: Pool
10. Miguel Almiron - 7
Pressed harder and higher than his team-mates early in the game, never let his head drop. Photo: OLI SCARFF
11. Allan Saint-Maximin - 7
Unlike Joelinton, he was prepared to shoot on sight, forced a save from de Gea seconds before making his second chance count. Photo: STU FORSTER
