Newcastle fans slam 'unacceptable performance' after Aston Villa defeat as few come away with credit

Newcastle United’s three match unbeaten run was brought to a halt after a 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa – and supporters were quick to react to the result.

First-half goals from Conor Hourihane and Anwar El Ghazi just four minutes apart proved the difference – yet many supporters admitted it could have been more.

Here are some of the responses from social media:

@NUFC360: We should’ve lost by far more than this today, but thankfully we have Dubravka in goal. Unacceptable performance whichever way you view it.

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce at Aston Villa.

@Rich1982Miller: What a waste of a night this is, looked forward to this game for over a week and what a disappointment, in all fairness Villa deserve all 3 points they are far the better team here, we’ve been poor in every department, Saint max and dub only decent players

@angryZK: No intensity, one dimensional and devoid of ideas. The front 3 simply not working, may as well be playing on opposite teams, Joelinton isolated. Need to change it up for next week. Made Villa look good. Really poor.

@BenWing_: Serious question... serious... Dwight Gayle was on around 20 minutes, can someone please tell me if he even touched the ball once…

@petern280: Well that was an awful clueless performance, would’ve been much worse without @HecoDubravka

@Foxy_005: Either play Almiron in his preferred position or drop him, either provide support for Joelinton or swap him out for Carroll and how is Shelvey captain in our starting 11? He is consistently the laziest and most unmotivated player on the pitch every time he plays

@rsmyth24: That was a grim way to waste an evening. Watching #NUFC on TV is now such a chore.

@kingkie1994: Bruce got it awfully wrong today. Shocking tactics. Awful. And the players where disgusting. Looked disinterested for the majority of the game bar the first 5 minutes of the second half. Not good enough. Going to be a long season.

@UltraStarTime: Undone by two free-kicks tonight yet the better team @AVFCOfficial won & we weren’t at it like we have been in the past two wins. Have to shape up fast before @ManCity on Sat.
