Newcastle United 'main candidates' to sign Premier League midfielder as Steve Bruce submits double enquiry

Newcastle United are in Premier League action against Leeds United tonight – but transfer speculation is still doing the rounds.

It had – and still is – expected to be a quiet finish to the January window for Steve Bruce, though that may change as the United head coach fights to keep his job.

The 60-year-old has decided to freshen up his coaching department with the imminent arrival of Graeme Jones, so could he do the same to his playing squad?

Well, according to Football League World, the Magpies have enquired about Stoke City midfielder Nick Powell.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a strong start to the Championship season, scoring seven and providing two assists in 23 matches.

His form under former Toon player Michael O’Neill is said to have attracted the interest of Newcastle, though the Potters have no intention of selling.

A potential move to the Premier League would be seen as a second chance by Powell, who failed to make the most of his switch to Manchester United in 2012 from Crewe.

Newcastle, however, could experience some joy in the market, should they act on their reported interest in PSV Eindhoven full-back Chris Gloster.

It was reported last week that the Magpies had reportedly asked about the American, and he is now allowed to leave the Dutch club.

Eindhovens Dagblad via Football-Oranje claim PSV have told the 20-year-old he can go, if an interested club makes an offer.

Bruce has been in the market for a left-back to provide competition for summer signing Jamal Lewis.

Meanwhile, United are reportedly among the “main candidates” in the race to sign a Premier League midfielder.

Here’s a round-up of some of the other transfer rumours involving Newcastle and their top-flight rivals this morning:
