Moments later, Liverpool were deal another blow as Virgil van Dijk was shown a straight red card for a last-man challenge on Alexander Isak.
The scoreline remained 1-0 heading in at half-time.
Here are the half-time Newcastle player ratings from the match...

9. Miguel Almiron - 6
Denied a fine goal by a spectacular save from Alisson in the first half. Squandered a good chance shortly afterwards. Skied a brilliant chance in the second half. Too many attacks ended after he received possession but almost had a moment of magic after going on a great run before hitting the post. Should have had a at least one goal. 10. Anthony Gordon - 8
Gave Trent Alexander-Arnold a tricky start to the game as the Liverpool right-back was shown a yellow card in the opening minutes before he punished a mistake to give Newcastle the lead. A dazzling display and had chances to extend Newcastle’s lead with some positive runs forward. | Getty Images

11. Alexander Isak - 6
Showed good movement to break through on goal which led to Liverpool’s red card. Was relatively quiet otherwise before being withdrawn. | AFP via Getty Images
