Former Newcastle United and Portsmouth star set to become free agent after statement issued

A former Newcastle United midfielder is looking for a new club this summer.

Former Newcastle United and Arsenal midfielder Isaac Hayden has confirmed he has left Queens Park Rangers after spending the last season with the Championship club.

The Gunners academy product was one of Newcastle’s first summer signings following their relegation from the Premier League in 2016 and he went on to play a key part in securing an immediate return to the top flight under Rafa Benitez. Hayden continued to feature under the Spanish boss and successor Steve Bruce over the following seasons before spending several loan spells away from Tyneside as current boss Eddie Howe settled into life on Tyneside.

After helping United surge away from the relegation zone under Howe, Hayden experienced mixed fortunes during loan stints with Norwich City, Standard Liege and QPR before his time as a Magpie was effectively brought to an end by another temporary move to Portsmouth during the second half of the 2024/25 season. Hayden helped Pompey preserve their Championship status before joining QPR last summer and he went on to make 30 appearances in all competitions - but will now begin the search for another club after confirming his departure on Tuesday.

In a statement released via his Instagram account, Hayden said: “Another season done, another season of learning and progress. Having the honour of playing for QPR again, in front of packed out Loftus Road crowds and the loyal away supporters for a full season this time round really makes you realise how great this club is. I want to thank the owners, Christian, Julien and all the staff, for the opportunity this season to try to help the club progress as much as possible and play games again in this jersey.

“Meanwhile, a fantastic group of young players I have shared the dressing room with that I look forward to watching grow and develop into top players, taking this club forward onto the next stage of the project. Whenever leaving a club I always try to leave it in a better place and I believe this club will go from strength to strength moving forwards. I will always hold QPR in my heart and wish everyone associated with the club the best for the future.”
