Newcastle United's away form compared as Wear-Tyne derby v Sunderland looms large

How does Newcastle United's away form compare to their rivals across the Premier League as they prepare to visit arch rivals Sunderland?

Newcastle United’s away form has been a topic of discussion throughout the first half of the Premier League season.

After kicking off their away fixtures for the season with a trio of goalless draws against Leeds United, Aston Villa and AFC Bournemouth, the Magpies emerged without a point from their next three Premier League away days as they fell to defeats at Brighton and Hove Albion, West Ham United and Brentford.

With concerns over their away form rising with every passing game, Eddie Howe’s men finally broke their seasonal duck by easing to all three points on their maiden visit to Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium. Malick Thiaw opened the scoring when he headed his first Magpies goal inside the opening 60 seconds before Lewis Miley doubled the advantage with a low drive from the edge of the area just after the midway point of the first half.

Nick Woltemade added a third goal ahead of half-time and Thiaw neatly bookmarked a fine away performance when he headed home his second goal and United’s fourth of the night just before the hour-mark to ensure the Magpies finally claimed the elusive away win. No Newcastle fan will need to know what lies in wait in their next Premier League away day - and although the Champions League visit to Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday night remains the priority, there is no doubt some minds are already looking towards Sunday’s trip to arch rivals Sunderland.

So with their visit to the Stadium of Light now just days away, how does Newcastle’s away form compare to the Black Cats and their other Premier League rivals?

Speaking after his side claimed a first away win of the season at Everton, Howe said: "That (away win) was really important (for the fans) as we haven’t had that feeling enough or at all. Very pleased today that we were able to put that right and give them that winning feeling to go back to Newcastle with. I’m just pleased I don’t have to answer the dreaded questions on it (the winless away run). We have a lot of work to do to say we have solved some of the issues we have had, but it is a big moment for us. A step forward. Time will tell (if this is a turning point) I’m not going to make any big statements, there is a long way to go."
