Bruno Guimaraes believes Newcastle United can still qualify for Europe next season.
Despite relegation whispers before kick-off, the Magpies beat Brighton 3-1 to move within four points of a potential Conference League spot. It was certainly a nervy affair, with Jack Hinshelwood’s strike on 60 minutes causing fear to emanate around St James’ Park.
Guimaraes opened up about the pre-match mentality in the dressing room as Newcastle ended a five-game losing streak. In a bold message to his teammates, the skipper vowed that European qualification can still be achieved.
Bruno Guimaraes rallies Newcastle United
"It felt very good, in the changing room before the game we knew today was important for us, chasing European football for next season,” Guimaraes said. “The points are crucial, we keep dreaming and believing. It was a tough game, Brighton are a good team.
“Today for everything we have done we deserve the win. They had a lot of chances. In the first half, we were better but second half they were better. I am glad we could keep three points. We are looking up not down. We can still play European football next season, we must win the next three games."
Eddie Howe on European hopes
Eddie Howe played down the suggestions of a late continental push at the full-time whistle. He told The Gazette: “I've not seen the league table, so you'll understand today was all about the win and the win was much needed. We want to try and win the last three games and we'll see where it takes us.”
