Newcastle United fans won’t be happy with Premier League announcement ahead of Burnley clash
Newcastle United latest news: The Premier League have announced who will referee Newcastle United v Burnley.
Newcastle United take on Burnley at St James’ Park this afternoon with hopes of bouncing back from their draw with Spurs in midweek.
Eddie Howe’s side were just minutes away from securing a third-straight Premier League win before Cristian Romero’s stoppage time winner ensured they would have to settle for a point. Burnley, meanwhile, were beaten 1-0 by Crystal Palace 24 hours later as they slipped to a fifth-straight defeat in the league.
A home game against a newly-promoted side is the perfect fixture for Howe’s men to have following that disappointment on Tuesday night, but they can’t afford to underestimate the Clarets ahead of what could be a season-defining few weeks. Following their clash with Burnley this afternoon, Newcastle face Bayer Leverkusen, Sunderland, Fulham in the Carabao Cup and then Chelsea in a quartet of games which could prove pivotal when the season wraps up in May.
Premier League announce Newcastle United v Burnley referee
Stuart Attwell has been revealed as the referee for Newcastle United’s clash with Burnley this afternoon. Attwell last took charge of a Magpies game less than a month ago when he refereed their 3-1 defeat to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Despite taking the lead that day, Howe’s side were outplayed in the second half by the Bees and ended the match with just ten men following Dan Burn’s red card. Burn was dismissed by Attwell that day after being shown two yellow cards, with his second booking coming after a foul on Dango Ouattara.
Many believe that Burn was fortunate not to be shown a red card minutes earlier as his tackle on Ouattara again went unpunished by Attwell. That defeat to Brentford made it three defeats in a row for Newcastle United in matches refereed by Attwell following 2-0 and 4-1 reverses against Liverpool and Bournemouth last season.

Today, Attwell will be assisted by Constantine Hatzidakis and Steve Meredith at St James’ Park. Sam Allison will be on fourth official duty between the two dugouts.
VAR at Stockley Park will be operated by Paul Howard. He will be assisted by Sian Massey-Ellis.
Newcastle United v Burnley - past matches
The Magpies have won all four of their previous meetings with Burnley. That run stretches back to a defeat against the Clarets in the Carabao Cup back in 2021 in one of Steve Bruce’s final matches in charge of Newcastle United.
Eddie Howe, therefore, has a perfect record against his former employers as Newcastle United manager with his first victory as Magpies boss coming against Burnley just over four years ago. That 1-0 win was Newcastle’s first of the season, at the 14th attempt, and was sealed by a solitary Callum Wilson goal.
Newcastle United then beat Burnley at Turf Moor on the final day of that season in a result which relegated their hosts to the Championship. Howe’s men twice beat Vincent Kompany’s Burnley side during their last Premier League campaign by scorelines of 2-0 and 4-1 to continue their perfect recent record against the Clarets.
