That’s according to The Athletic, who claims Steve Bruce is considering alternative options to Joe Willock in the event that he remains at Arsenal.

Barkley is among those being targetted, as well as Huddersfield Town’s Lewis O’Brien, Celtic’s Olivier Ntcham and Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher.

Meanwhile, Bruce also wants to sign a central defender, left-back and a striker.

Magpies players want Jetro Willems return – report

Senior players at Newcastle want the club to re-sign Jetro Willems, according to Football Insider.

The 27-year-old is a free agent after leaving Eintracht Frankfurt and is said to be “very keen” on returning to St James’s Park.

And a number of first-team stars reportedly share that view after the Dutchman impressed on Tyneside before his loan spell was cut short due to an ACL injury.

Willems has not played competitively since he was stretchered off against Chelsea in January 2020. The Gazette understands the Magpies are considering a move for the left-back.

Toon urged to offer Andy Carroll new deal

Former Newcastle defender Steve Howey says he would keep Andy Carroll at St James’s Park for another season.

The Geordie striker’s contract is set to expire in the coming weeks and there are doubts over his future after he made just three Premier League starts last term.

Despite Carroll’s lack of game time, Howey is keen to see the 32-year-old remain on Tyneside having stayed fit for virtually the whole season.

Howey told Football FanCast: “I’m surprised that Carroll will be out of contract because me personally, I would keep him for another year, I really would. He’s been fit this season but just hasn’t been given the opportunity to play so that’s not his fault.

“It’s not his fault that he’s not played, that’s the manager’s fault because all Carroll can do is be fit. I still think he’s a threat and that centre backs still won’t like playing against him.”
