Newcastle United could face Celtic challenge if they move for Rafa Benitez

Lennon took the decision to resign with his side 18 points adrift of Rangers in the Scottish Premiership.

The 49-year-old took charge for a second spell in February 2019 and led the club to two titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup.

Many names have entered the frame for the Celtic Park vacancy with John Kennedy, Steve Clarke and Roberto Martinez the favourites with the bookies.

But Benitez – who was recently linked with a stunning return to St James’s Park – is also high up in the betting to replace Lennon.

The Madrid-born manager is currently the fifth favourite at 9/1 with Sky Bet.

The former Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid boss is a free agent again after leaving Dalian Pro in China last month.

But reports this week suggested owner Mike Ashley had contacted Benitez with an offer to return to the North East, with current boss Steve Bruce facing increasing pressure following a string of poor results.

Benitez and Ashley failed to agree terms on a new contract in June 2019 after a three-year stint in the North East.

Following his departure, Benitez has expressed sadness in an emotional message to Magpies supporters.

There is still some hope, however, that Benitez may once again take the reins at Newcastle in a stunning return to Tyneside.

The 60-year-old remains first-choice on the list of Amanda Staveley should she eventually complete a takeover.
