Newcastle – who beat Crewe Alexandra 3-0 in York on Tuesday – take on Barnsley at the club’s training ground tomorrow. The club also has a game against Middlesbrough at Rockliffe Park on September 1.

United head coach Steve Bruce said: “Crewe played us at the training camp. Barnsley, Boro and Stoke will follow. So it’s a decent preparation, but very quick in terms of turnaround. We start in less than three weeks, and that’s quite unbelievable, but there you go – that’s what we’re up against.”
