Having taken the lead courtesy of recalled kid Matty Longstaff, United capitulated – and defensive errors was the issue for Bruce’s usually well-drilled troops.

"We had a horrible 20 minutes before half-time and just after. We made too many mistakes. You can't account for individual errors,” said Bruce.

“I know it is Christmas but we gave away more goals today than in three months. You get punished for those kind of mistakes."

He continued: “They have quality at the top end but for two or three goals we've got to do better. We stuck at it but it was a tough afternoon. We could not chase it – they would tear us apart.

On facing Everton in less than 48 hours, Bruce said: "It’s a ridiculous schedule. You get injuries. We will have to see how we are." #NUFC
