Kobbie Mainoo scored the only goal of the first half to put the hosts ahead.
Eddie Howe made one change to his side that drew 1-1 with Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday with Kieran Trippier starting for the first time in over two months as Tino Livramento dropped out due to an ankle injury. Alexander Isak kept his place in the side despite suffering with illness while Callum Wilson missed out once again.
The match is a crucial one for both sides in their quest for European qualification. While Manchester United have the fall-back of an FA Cup final, anything other than a win would effectively end their hopes of a top-seven finish.
Just after the half-hour mark, Manchester United took the lead as the ball trickled to an unmarked Mainoo to turn past Martin Dubravka in the Newcastle goal.
At the other end, Dan Burn saw a header cleared off the line by Casemiro and Anthony Gordon had a penalty shout turned down after being pulled by Sofyan Amrabat.
Newcastle ended the half on the front foot but couldn’t find an equaliser as the sides went in with Manchester United leading 1-0.

Had to be alert to deny Amad from distance in the opening 15 minutes. Blocked Alejandro Garnacho's angled effort 10 minutes later. Could have done better for Manchester United's second and third goals.
2. Kieran Trippier - 4
Back in the starting line-up after more than two months out. Played Mainoo onside for Manchester United's opener. Put a couple of teasing balls into the box without them coming to anything. Caught out for the corner that lead to Manchester United going in front. Just looked off the pace after a spell out and was withdrawn early.
3. Emil Krafth - 5
Left gaps defensively but has kept his composure on the ball. Covered well in the second half following a Trippier mistake.
4. Dan Burn - 5
Came so close to equalising for Newcastle with his header just cleared off the line by Casemiro. Made some important blocks and challenges at the other end but was unconvincing for Rasmus Hojlund's goal.
