Eddie Howe’s issued an update on Callum Wilson after the striker missed Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup win over Crystal Palace.

Wilson, forced off against Southampton on Sunday due to illness, sat out last night’s penalty shootout victory at St James’s Park, and Howe spoke about Wilson’s likely availability for Saturday’s home game against Chelsea.

Wilson – who has scored six goals so far this season – could be named in England’s World Cup squad today along with club-mates Kieran Trippier and Nick Pope, who made three saves in the shootout.

"We want to develop players, and progress their careers, so playing in World Cups is very, very important to all the international players, not just the English guys,” said Howe. “We’re very proud of our internationals, regardless of who they’re playing for. We're keeping our fingers crossed for them."
