Wilson, forced off against Southampton on Sunday due to illness, sat out last night’s penalty shootout victory at St James’s Park, and Howe spoke about Wilson’s likely availability for Saturday’s home game against Chelsea.

“Callum, I didn’t want to risk with his illness and depleted immune system,” said United head coach Eddie Howe. “He should be fine (for Chelsea).”

Wilson – who has scored six goals so far this season – could be named in England’s World Cup squad today along with club-mates Kieran Trippier and Nick Pope, who made three saves in the shootout.

"We want to develop players, and progress their careers, so playing in World Cups is very, very important to all the international players, not just the English guys,” said Howe. “We’re very proud of our internationals, regardless of who they’re playing for. We're keeping our fingers crossed for them."
