Almiron – who needed treatment in the first half – was forced off at the break at St James’s Park, and Saint-Maximin, troubled by hamstring problems last season, limped off in the second half while Newcastle were leading 1-0.

"It’s too early (to say how bad they are),” said head coach Steve Bruce. “For him (Almiron) to come off, and be in the state he’s in, we’re fear the worst.”

Jamaal Lascelles put Steve Bruce’s side ahead in the Premier League fixture. Ruben Neves cancelled out his strike.

Lascelles said: "We had very good chances, and we’re lost for words. We got a point, but it should have been three points. I wanted the three points, and I would have been much happier with that than scoring. A lot of positives, but we need to put the points on the board."
