Newcastle United star releases statement after suffering training ground injury
Newcastle United goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen has broken his silence on his injury setback.
Newcastle United goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen has begun his comeback from a hamstring injury.
The 20-year-old suffered the injury two weeks ago while on international duty with France under-21s and is expected to be sidelined for “a couple of months”, according to Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle.
Jaouen joined the Magpies from Ligue 2 outfit Stade de Reims for £18million in the summer, arriving as the club’s second-choice goalkeeper with the promise of opportunities in cup competitions.
The Frenchman made his debut in the Carabao Cup second round win over West Bromwich Albion but has featured in just one matchday squad since. He had only just overcome a knee injury when he linked up with the France under-21s, only to suffer another setback in training.
Ewen Jaouen breaks silence on injury setback
Jaouen has now begun his recovery and has taken to Instagram to share an update with supporters.
“Every setback has a purpose,” Jaouen wrote. “I got injured while on international duty, but I know this is just another step in my journey.
“A new challenge starts today and I’m already locked in on what’s next. Fully focused on my comeback. See you soon @nufc 💪”
In Jaouen’s absence, Nick Pope has been promoted to the bench as back-up to first-choice goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek. Newcastle attempted to offload Pope throughout the summer but failed to find a suitor.
The 34-year-old looked set to join Ipswich Town earlier in the transfer window, only for the move to collapse following the departure of their head coach, Kieran McKenna.
