Saint-Maximin has returned to Tyneside after a spell in France recuperating from Covid-19 with his family, and Steve Bruce hopes that the winger will soon be given the all-clear to resume training.

United’s coach said earlier today that he believed that Saint-Maximin – who was photographed in a Newcastle supermarket yesterday – had to stay at home for five days following his arrival in the country, and the club has insisted that the 23-year-old “did not contravene any quarantine rules” when he left his house.

A statement read: "Newcastle United can confirm that Allan Saint-Maximin did not contravene any UK quarantine rules during a visit to a supermarket in Newcastle on Thursday evening. Allan will continue to adhere to all quarantine rules and Covid-19 guidelines and will follow return to training protocols.

"The club considers this matter closed, and will not be issuing further comment."
