The 48-year-old was confirmed as Red Devils boss late on Saturday evening, just hours after they sacked Nasreddine Nabi following their 0-0 CAF Champions League draw Simba SC.

Al-Merrikh are currently second in the league but have struggled in the Champions League – sitting bottom of their group after the opening three matches.

They are one of Sudan’s most successful clubs and are the current Sudan Premier League champions.

Clark returns to management just over 12 months since leaving National League North side Blyth Spartans.

During that period, the former Magpies midfielder has been in a director of football role with ambitious non-league side Newcastle Blue Star.

Starting out at Huddersfield Town in 2008 – where his 43 league games unbeaten remains an EFL record, Clark has also managed at Birmingham City, Blackpool, Kilmarnock and Bury.
