Newcastle United legend reveals why defenders will hate playing against Callum Wilson plus fresh Joelinton interest

Alan Shearer has hailed Callum Wilson’s immediate Newcastle United impact and labelled him a ‘menace’ for defenders.

Newcastle secured the £20million signing in the build-up to the opening game of the new season with Wilson impressing and scoring on his debut in the West Ham win.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer said: “It has been a very encouraging week for Newcastle and they matched it with a really promising performance.

“They had an edge to them that I didn't see many times last season. That edge was because of Callum Wilson – his ability to constantly be a menace and be in and around the box is what Newcastle lacked.

“It will take his teammates some time to get used to it, he is making clever runs in behind.”

Shearer added: “He's horrible to play against, defenders hate that.”

Meanwhile, as reported in the Gazette this week, Turkish outfit Fenerbahce have again been linked with a move for Newcastle United striker Joelinton.

According to Turkish newspaper Türkiye, a move could even materialise in the coming days when the sale of Vedat Muriqi to Lazio is confirmed.

United, though, are unlikely to sanction the sale or loan of the Brazilian, who cost a club record £40m last summer, only to score just two league goals in 2019/20.

Meanwhile, according to reports in Colombia, Santiago Arias is a target of Newcastle United.

The right-back is also reportedly wanted by Wolves and Everton.

The Toffees recently signed countryman James Rodriguez, while Nuno is keen to replace new Tottenham signing Matt Doherty.
